How Much Would A 17 Year Old With A G2 Pay For Insurance For A 1995 Geo Metro Hatchback in Toronto?

Question: Im planning on getting my first car but the insurance is holding me back. Please Help. What Company do you suggest? Maybe you know someone with the same car and around the same age.

Answer: First I'll assume your not financing the purchase, since that vehicle should cost about $50 :-p . It depends on where in Toronto you live and whether you have driver training or not. Assuming you live in the Dufferin/Bloor area you're looking at at $6,500 for just the basic liability with driver training and $8,200 without driver training. This is with you as the principal operator. Keep in mind living out in Etobicoke or North York would make it cheaper, but we're talking about maximum $150 difference.

Answer: I'd not buy any vehicle for that price with such high mileage ever. You should pick up a book that is called the lemonade book on cars and that will help you in deciding what car to buy.For sure you need to buy a Honda or Tayota bec they'll be cheaper to maintain plus give you better gas mileage. One rule of thumb is to read up on the vehicle you plan to buy , plus know the common faults the vehicle has , never by a vehicle's model that hasn't been on the market for 5 yrs bec by then most defects will be out of them. Always check the inside of the vehicle , under the hood and run a check on the car's VIN number to see if it's been involved in any accidents or has any leans etc on it.Be sure that you have the vehicle checked by a reliable mechanic and if the seller doesn't allow you to do that , then walk away from that sale. When you check the outside of the car and it looks just too good be true be cautious bec they might of went out of their way to dress it up so you'd not concentrate on the rest of the vehicle. Check the oil when car is off and look for it being too thick or dirty or looks inpure or has metal particles in it by rubbing it with your fingers.Check the transmission fluid after you start the vehicle and shift it threw its gears. When shifting the gears hold you foot hard on the brake and if you feel a strong sudden jerking as you shift that tells you the transmission mount needs changing, plus have someone shift the gears as the car is idling and if you notice the engine moves a lot that means the engine mounts are faulty or bad. When checking the transmission fluid it should look pinkish or pinkish redish, if it's brown that's not good , plus smell it if it smells like burnt cigars walk away. Not always when the transmission fluid is brown or smells like a cigar does't mean the transmission isn't any good or is faulty but unless you drive the vehicle before and after changing the transmission fluid.Check the powersteering and rad levels too , look to see if the coolant looks inpure or has oil in it.If you notice the fluids all look very new and clean I'd be a bit cautious about buying that vehicle unless it well checked over by a mechanic first bec the seller might on purpose changed these fluids to trick you , but it's possible the previous owner kept it well maintained and compare it to the rest of car to see if it all makes sense. When you look under the hood check for any green or black , or pinkish fluids leaking not just under the hood but under the vehicle too , plus look for wetness stains some look like dirt thats wet or damp. Another test I do is go behind the car and check look and see if the exhaust stinks too much or is too white or black , all are signs that the engine or vehicle needs work. Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way some of the biggest mistakes people make in buying a used car or new vehicle is being in a rush or just them by their outside, plus they don't check with insurance companies on the costs to insure it beforehand. When you call around and find that many insurance companies don't offer any discounts to driver's ed students don't be surprised, plus call the insurance brokes bec they tend to offer at times the best quotes.Be sure not to rush into selecting any insurance company's quote. Best to do your homework first off and not worry about needing a car asap, take time and patience in your selection and be cautious of too good to be true vehicle deals.Keep in mind if you check all these sort of things and the seller wants to rush you or is looking nervous it's bec they are worried that you fully plan on checking the vehicle right out and thats not what they want bec more then likely their trying to rip you off or just hope you don't notice certain things. By the way that yr Honda Civics weren't too bad and last about 350,000 to 450,000 kms.Plus the price shouldn't be more then 1,200.00 to 1500.00 certified with emission tested.Mind you some might be in mint shape all around and asking 2000.00 to 2500.00 for them. Last thing is I know bec it's toronto where you live it's more expensive to be insured. If you even bought a car without certification or emissions but had it checked out before hand by a mechanic you might pick one up for 800.00 and end up paying 1,200 or more to cert and emissons it. Hope again that this info helps you in buying the right car but remember buy the lemonade book and read it bec it's a huge educational eye opener, plus spend the 70.00 or so for a full check on a car you've checked and like the most bec it's well worth it.
