G2 Driver Need Insuranceg2 driver need insuranceForum - Questions & AnswersG1 driver driving need insurance?Question: I'm 22 with my G1 license and soon to be going for my G2 but need more practice and needed some advice on the right ways to practice. My mother can take me out driving, but according to her only people over 25 are allowed to drive to be covered by her insurance. My Fiance is 23 with his G license but hasn't had it for 5 years so I can't really go out driving with him, right? So to drive with my mother, she has to be in the car with me, would it be okay? Do I have to be under her insurance to drive with her around town for practice? [According to her, her insurance will sky rocket if I was to be added to it] I live in Ontario, Canada. Thanks!Answer: There are two issues here. First, it your licensing restriction. As a G1, you need a person in the passenger seat who has at least four years driving experience (not five). Second, is that you need valid insurance on the vehicle you are driving. Most insurance companies give discounts based on the number of years of safe driving and more importantly limit the owner from allowing those who don't have a certain a certain amount of driving experience from using the vehicle. Ontario has private insurance so company rules can vary by age, years of driving experience, class of license, etc. Typically, your mother can just call the insurance company and ask for a (temporary) upgrade to her insurance to cover you practicing in the vehicle. Say six months or something. It will typically cost a couple of hundred extra for say six months. After that, you stop using the vehicle. Alternatively, if your fiance's coverage allows a G1 driver, you could borrow he car and find a more experienced driver (such as your mother). ![]() Adding a G2 driver to insurance?Question: I got my G2 today and I have a car but it needs repairing and i have no insurance on it at the moment. The thing is, that my car will probably be fixed in the next 1-3 months so i wouldn't need to be on their insurance very long. My question is once my car is fixed, can my parents take me off their insurance and go back to what they were paying before? Or are they obligated to pay for the whole year?Answer: As long as you have insurance they may delete you off their vehicle. They will go back to paying what they used to pay before they added you. Hope this helps. ![]() I got my G2 drivers licence, have a question bout insurance, when do i need it?Question: So without insurance I can't drive by myself yet right? Can I drive with my dad in the car if I dun have insurance?Answer: Your license level does not matter. If you drive on a public road, you are required to have insurance. ![]() |
