Car in minor flood, won't start - what to worry about?

Question: My car (a 2002 Dodge Neon) was caught in a flash flood on a low section of road last weekend. I managed to steer it partway onto the curb, but the motor cut out before I could do anything else. Water seeped in just up to seat-level on the driver's side in front, while it only came up a few inches on the passenger side and in the rear driver-side, due to the car's angle. The flooding didn't last long; it receded within maybe half an hour, I got the car towed home (thanks to a very helpful passerby) and let it dry out over the next few days while emptying it of all the now-partly-water-damaged stuff it was carrying. Ugh. Problem is, it still won't start. So now I'm starting to worry. When I turned the ignition key, the dashboard lights went on, but there was no engine sound at all. When I tried it again after a couple of days' drying, a light that seemed to mean "check engine" was lit (it looks like a little outline-drawing of an engine). (I don't remember seeing that one lit on the day of the flood, but I was a little stressed so maybe I just didn't see it.) Now that "engine" light is off. The battery light is on, so it might just need a jump, but I'm afraid to try it because I've heard nightmare stories about trapped water causing compression damage to pistons or other moving parts when the engine is started. Is this likely? Does it possibly just need more time to dry out? There's still a little water pooled on the floor in a couple of spots (I don't have a wet-dry vac so I'm having to use towels), and the weather hasn't exactly been hot and dry this week, so I wouldn't be surprised if moisture remains in the systems. Problem is, I know very little about cars; standard advice online seems to be "take out XYZ, dry it, and put it back in," but I can't attempt that without potentially doing more harm than good! I know that the very best advice is "take it to a mechanic" - but I'm unemployed and I simply don't have the resources. I do have comprehensive coverage on my insurance, but with a large deductible, so I'm not even sure it would be worth it to file a claim unless the car is going to be totaled, which I doubt after such a short immersion. Any advice is welcome!!!
