Car Insurance Questions And Answers In Njcar insurance questions and answers in NJForum - Questions & AnswersLive in NJ, bringing car to school in FL, question about car insurance?Question: I am looking to bring my car from NJ (where i'm a resident) to school with me in Florida, and I need some help: My father is freaking out because he thinks the car insurance will go WAY UP. Does anyone know how this works? Am i allowed to ship my car down there and not tell me insurance at all? Just like bringing it on a mini vacation lol. Remember, I'm not a resident of Florida. Any answers?!Answer: Yes your insurance will go up. The reason to do this is because your vehicle is so far away from you home. Another reason is the vehicle will be at a college, and you will more than likely have your vehicle out in the parking lot instead of your gargage or driveway. If you will be parking you vehicle in a private home gargage or driveway then make sure you tell your insurance company that. You have to tell your insurance company that you are taking the vehicle down there, because if you have an accident they might deny your claim. The best person to ask is your insurance company. They can give you a quote on how much your premium will go up. Then again you might get lucky, and your rates might not go up at all. ![]() My dad lives in NJ and is buying me a car. I live in FL. Please help.?Question: Can anyone help with these questions? My dad lives in NJ 6 months out of the year and with me the other 6 months and is buying me a car. Everything is going to be in his name... I live in Florida. He currently has car insurance on his car in NJ. Does he have to get a totally new policy for Florida since that is where the car is going to be or can he add it to his NJ policy? Where should be pay the sales tax? Floruda because that is where the car is going to be and where he is purchasing it or NJ because that is where he is from? Help please. I don't want the sales guys at the dealership to screw this up and they seem to not know what they hell they are doing. Maybe there is an "expert" on yahoo answers.Answer: The car needs to be insured in the state where it is principally garaged - in this case Florida. Therefore, there needs to be a policy in Florida that lists you as a driver of the vehicle. The policy can be in Dad's name and you a driver or if the car title is in both you and Dad's name - you can be a named insured on the Florida policy. ![]() First time buying a used car from a private seller and then moving, questions?Question: Hi there. I've never bought a car before so I'm in the dark about a lot of things. I am buying a used car from a private seller. On top of that, I'm moving (by driving this car) to California right after I buy it (probably a day or two days maximum) and I have a ton of questions. I'm in New Jersey by the way, so any NJ-specific answers would be excellent. 1. After I test drive, get it checked, and therefore deem it worthy and purchase it, what is the first thing I should do? I know I must go to the DMV but can someone explain to me the title, registration, and tags? Anything else I need at the DMV? 2. Is there an option for all of it to be temporary seeing as I'm going to drive straight to California basically a day or two after I buy this car? 3. How much would all of this cost? Approximate estimate? 4. I don't have a California address yet (I'm kind of just winging the move though I do have sufficient savings set aside) so when I get insurance, what do I put down? Those are all of my questions, hopefully someone can shed some light for me. Thank you so so much. New question: How would I provide sales tax when I buy from a private party?Answer: You pretty much have 2 options here. In NJ, you can get an out of state temporary tag, that give you the opportunity to drive your vehicle to (in this case) California. But since you don't have a California address yet, that could be problem, since the NJ title has to have an out of state address for the buyer. Your other option is to title and register it here in NJ, since you have a NJ residence now. You will have to have insurance in NJ, pay the sales tax, title and registration fees and get NJ license plates. Then you can drive it to Ca. That way when you get to Ca., get an address you can get it insured, titled and registered there. But since the car is already yours, you will NOT have to pay any additional sales tax. There is emmisions testing in Ca., and I am not sure what the requirements are, but you can check when you get there. Those are your options. I will try to go down your list and answer your questions in order. 1. You can get an out of state temporary tag to drive it to Ca, but you need a Ca. address. The fee for an out of state temp is either 5 or 10 dollars. Or you can insure, title and register it in NJ. You will pay 7% sales tax on the purchase price, $20.00 for the title, and depending on the year and weight of the car plates can run anywere from 30 to 50 dollars. 2. Yes, with an out of state address on the back of the title, you can get an out of state temporary tag from NJMVC. 3. 7% sales tax, $20.00 title, $30-50 for plates in NJ No matter what you decide to do, you will need proof of insurance that is recognized in whatever state. Good luck and have a safe trip. ![]() |
