Can i insure my UK car with ROI insurance?

Question: Hi, I am looking to insure my UK registered car with ROI insurance. I travel to and from Ireland but spend the majority of my time in Ireland. I would like to know which ROI insurance companies will insure my UK registered car and if the insurance would be valid for driving in the UK, if so, for how long ?

Answer: I may be in Canada, but I am a retired insurance professional. Some basic tenets of insurance are the same no matter where you are. The only Irish company that could insure you would have to be one licenced to market insurance in the UK, and it would still be insured to your UK residence by the UK offices of that company. I am not sure what you are trying to accomplish. Cheaper insurance? The rates are determined party by where the car "lives".

How can I bring a car from the UK to Ireland cheaply?

Question: I am a resident in the UK for the last 8 months, I will be moving back to Ireland in February. I may not be able to be VRT exempt etc. How can I get the car from Ireland to England driving it? Can I get an Irih insurance company to insure me for 2 days on an English reg until I get home to change it? Or can i get the reg plates changed in the UK and insure it and bring it home? Thanks,

Answer: Drive it home on the english insurance and then deal with the paperwork when you get home. If you don't have english insurance an Irish company may well insure it under the english plate temporarily.

Is there a directory or similar showing whether a company's call centres are UK/Ireland or India based?

Question: I want to change insurance company from Norwich Union as I have had awful bother trying to amend details on car, house and particularly travel insurance, and talking with people who I have difficulty listening to and talking to accurately, and who can rarely give me answers anyway. Now it is very similar with BT in terms of email customer service based in India. Before I change companies for phone or insurance I want to know I'm not going to have the same problems I'm trying to escape from.

Answer: Phone the companies for a quote, you might be able to tell from the person who answers if they are a British based call centre or a foreign based one.
