Car Insurance Companies In Massachusetts

Progressive is hiking my Massachusetts car insurance rate by 23% this year! Is that normal?

Question: My policy is about to come up for renewal and they're going to hike up my rate by 23%! I just talked to their customer service person and she said they're doing it all over Massachusetts. Are all the car insurance companies raising their rates so much in Massachusetts? Was there some law that passed which changed their profit margin or something? Is there another car insurance company that will give me a better deal?

Answer: The MA insurance market opened up a couple years ago and loads of new companies came in to sell insurance. The "competition phase" is over. Every insurance company will be raising their rates in MA over the coming year to make up for the inflated fees charged by the shops and garages. It costs approximately 33% more for an insurance company to fix a car in MA than it does in any of the neighboring states!

Question: I recently heard that MA IS allowing competition with car insurance companies.. YAY! However, Geico and Allstate still don't provide insurance in the state. Progressive DOES. Does anyone else know of some GOOD, reputable (car) insurance companies in MA? THANKS! :-)

Question: A lot of insurance companies such as (gieco, nationwide) don't cover massachusetts. What are some of names of the providers with coverage in MA?

Answer: I have Commerce, it's not too bad. My husband has Plymouth Rock. Like someone else said, talk to an agent. Because of Massachusetts Auto Reform, more companies will be able to come to Mass so you'll be able to shop around more for better rates. I believe that starts April 1, 2008.

Answer: This depends on the situation, the company and the coverages. Is this an accident that is your fault? Or another drivers fault? Is the accident covered only under your policy or theirs? Or both? If you are dealing with someone Else's insurance company, you will have to wait until they COMPLETE their investigation, as well as have someone look at the vehicle. If you are dealing with your own insurance company, they may not have to investigate as much since you are telling them the accident was your fault. In theory, provided this is a cut and dry type of accident (i.e. you were rear ended when you were at a stoplight) and there is no question of fault, and someone gets out quickly to assess the damage of your car, then it shouldn't generally take more than a month. If there is anything wrong with the claim (i.e. questions about fault, they have trouble getting out to view your car for damage, there was previous damage to your car) then it could take much longer. Get your insurance agent involved and they can help to speed along the process. Good luck to you!
